Over the past 15 years my career path has looked like… well I don’t know what you’d call it, but here are my moves.
- Degree in Advertising (in Texas)
- Special Education (moved to New Hampshire)
- Technical Support for a SaaS / IaaS company
- HR for same company
- Sales Support in fashion retail (moved back to Texas)
- IT & HR at a manufacturer and construction company
I share this to say that I’m not afraid of a new challenge and don’t mind “putting myself out there”. I’ve spoken on stage in front of hundreds and am comfortable delivering our weekly message in children’s church even when the head pastor is watching. Not much phases me.
I’m able to do this by stretching myself weekly.
By stretching we can reach a little further and connect with people and ideas we weren’t able to before.
Out of all of my experiences I’m amused to realize that the most difficult stretching has been blogging. I can easily handle being asked to get on stage last second in front of hundreds but the idea of posting a blog that someone might read and eviscerate feels like naked stretching with the blinds open. I find this amusing because, let’s be honest, this isn’t being read by hundreds of people. Most likely it’s my mom, my wife, and bots.
Still, it feels like the stretching I’m demonstrating to “the world” is:
So why am I doing this?
As I mentioned, I stretch myself weekly. I want to stretch myself daily. I’m sure I’ll look back at these posts and cringe but along the way I’ll grow and connect with people I never would have been able to connect with otherwise.
How often do you stretch yourself?
Daily? Weekly? Monthly? As often as you change your oil? If it’s daily then congrats! I’d love to hear what you’re doing and how you’re doing it. If it’s any of the others I hope you can move closer to the daily spot. I’ll be plugging away trying to do the same.
